Parts of a plant and their functions

Plants and their parts

Plants and trees are everywhere around us.
They play a great role in our ecosystem.
They are very important to all living things and the planet.
Plants and trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen which is essential for animals and human to breathe.

Let's have a look at the parts of a plant:

Plants have typically six parts which are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.

Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and helps to hold the plant to the ground so the plant does not fall.

Stems are strong part that holds the plant upright. It allows water, nutrients to flow to the leaves.

Leaves of a plant helps to collect sunlight and most important of all they help to make food for the plant.  They come in many shapes and sizes.

Flowers are useful because they make fruit and seeds for the plant. Flowers are always beautiful so that they can attract other insects such as bees and birds.

Fruits are the part of plants that protects seeds. The seeds are moved to places by animals that eat the fruits.

Seeds are very important as they help the plant to reproduce as they grow into a new plant.

This digital drag and drop worksheet helps you to understand the different parts of a plant and their functions. Have fun!

Food Chain

Food chain

What is a food chain?
Food chain refers to the order how living things depend on each other for food as energy.

All living things need food to survive.
The food supplies nutrient and energy.
It shows the links between different organisms based on the food they eat.

For example:
Plants make their own food from sunlight, water, soil & other nutrients.
Plants are then eaten by creatures eg; insects known as consumers.
The insects are then eaten by birds.
The birds are then eaten by other animals.

This video provides informations on food chain for kids.

Living and non-living things

All living things can breathe, eat, grow, move and have senses.
Living things are alive and they need water, food, air and sunlight to live.
Examples: people, plants, animals

All non-living things do not breathe, eat, grow, move or have senses.
Non-living things are never alive.
Examples: things, rocks, water

States of Matter Solid, Liquid & Gas

States of matter

Materials around us comes in three different forms solidliquid and gas, which we classify as states of matter.

Solid has a fixed volume and shape.
Example: ice blocks, cars, books, tables and computers

Liquid adapts to the shape of its container.
Example: water, oil, tea and blood

Gas expands to occupy the volume and shape of its container.
Example: the air we breathe, the cooking gas

Have a go at answering the worksheet by choosing the states of matter to match the pictures.

Here is a video on states of matter, enjoy watching!
